Changes on the Horizon in the Year of the Horse

Baltimore HealthQuest: January 2014
The Heavens and Your Health
by Kari Noren-Hoshal

Welcome to 2014! Seems like it was just yesterday, we were starting 2013. This past year has seen major planets and nodes in water signs, creating an often exhausting calvacade of emotional situations and reactions with Jupiter in Cancer, Saturn in Scorpio and the North Node in Scorpio. Cancer-ruled great floods swept the planet in India, killing 6,500, Calgary, Canada, Argentina and the Philippines causing billions and billions of dollars in damage. The planet mourned the passing of the father of a liberated South Africa, Nelson Mandela and caused us to look back at just how far we have come with regards to civil rights. Our sense of national security was threatened in June of 2013, when a former CIA contractor named Edward Snowden exposed a massive surveillance program named PRISM operated by the United States, Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. PRISM includes the storage of information collected from Internet history, telephone calls, and texts of private citizens in these countries and is being called an infringement on human rights. A civil war in Syria has continued to rage on for a third year with the leader of this country allegedly using chemical weapons on his own people. The war in Syria began on March 15, 2011 and has caused the death of approximately 100,000 people—about half of whom are citizens. The people of Syria have called for the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad, whose family has held the presidency in Syria since 1971. They have created the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces. The coalition was recognized as the legitimate government of Syria by the Arab League in 2013 and has been supported by the European Union and the United States, who have enforced a large amount of sanctions against Syria since the war started. And, despite some very low moments, there were some highs. With Pope Benedict’s resignation at age 85, we gained a new father of the Catholic Church in Pope Francis I. The humble and very popular Argentinian former cardinal began increasing the scope of allegiance to the Vatican on the very first days of his papacy. He refuses to ride in the papal limo to work and chooses to live in more humble apartments than is customary. A photo of Pope Francis, kissing the forehead of a man horribly disfigured by a skin disease, moved people to tears worldwide.

So whereas 2013 was a year of major shifts in power and allegiance under a stellium of water sign planets, it is with a sigh of welcome relief that 2014 proclaims a shift to more uplifting fire and air signs in the nodes and major planets. In February, the North Node will shift from Scorpio into Libra and Jupiter in the security conscious sign of Cancer, will finally shift into more upbeat and self-affirming Leo. Leo the Lion magnifies our desire to establish new creative enterprises as well as to have some fun! All in all, there should be a greater degree of consumer confidence in 2014 as well as a rise in new business start-ups. Finally, Saturn in Scorpio, which has held our feet to the fire of scrutiny in almost every way possible, will give way to Saturn in Sagittarius, another fire sign, in December of 2014. Look to make an exciting new start in 2014. Decide to start fresh in some way this year. From mid-July, when Jupiter moves into Leo, you will receive needed encouragement just when you need it most. Fire and air sign natives will benefit most from the passage of Jupiter through Leo from July 17th, 2014 to August 12th of 2015. Leos and Aquarians will find the scope of their activities expanding like crazy while Taurus and Scorpio folks will find challenges to overcome at every turn. It can be done Bulls and Eagles, but your stubborn refusal to change is not the way to get what you want.

Whenever planets or nodes enter cardinal signs, we need to make way for a new era. The cardinal signs Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, are the ones that start each new season of the year. Libra is the ruler of the 7th house of marriage and partnerships. The North Node will move into the sign of the Scales from February 19th of 2014 until November 12th of 2015. During this time, romantic relationships will have an opportunity to either grow and flourish or wither and die. Sharing, listening and cooperation are areas of concentration that we must learn to use as we learn to be more sensitive to other’s needs. Due to the rulership of Libra by the planet Venus, we are likely to see an improvement in the economy in 2014 and 2015. In your own astrological chart, find the house location of 29 to 15 degrees of Libra in order to know what area of your life will be most impacted in 2014 by a need for greater cooperation.

There will be two very important Uranus squares to Pluto this year. The first, April 22nd will see a challenge of these two mighty Titans at 14 degrees of Aries and Capricorn, the exact degree of the United States’ sun! There is also an exact opposition between Pluto and Jupiter on this day. A cardinal grand cross is a time of instability when we don’t know exactly what we stand for, but we do know what we can no longer tolerate. We can be certain that there will be Aries protests of some kind at around this time, against the Capricorn-ruled institution of the government. The faceoff between the Republican and Democratic forces in the Senate and the House are likely to be especially poisonous at this time. While it will be too early for 2016 presidential candidates to announce in April of 2014, political power plays will be strongly felt at this time. The second square of Uranus and Pluto will come on December 15th, just before Saturn moves into Sagittarius on December 24th. With one more year to go in this tense arrangement between the planet of humanitarian action and the planet of old-guard power, we are reminded that there are still many human rights issues to be defended.

The month of January begins with a re-evaluation of our values. Venus has been retrograde since the Winter Solstice of December 21st. Each new year begins with an evaluation of where we stand in life and what we want to change in order to reach our goals. Many will find themselves with more New Year’s resolutions than ever! There are so many ways in which we can improve the quality of our lives, if only we give ourselves the time to make needed changes. The Venus retrograde will last until January 31st, when it goes direct again, but, it’s influence will be felt up until March 5th when it finally emerges beyond the degree at which it went retrograde on December 21st. Be aware that you will have a hard time making definite decisions during this period because you won’t be exactly sure what you believe in. Former friends and loves will reappear during this time. Your feelings for these people are being tested so that after this period you will finally know where your relationship really stands. For many, this will be a time to say goodbye.

How unusual! The New Moon at 11 degrees Capricorn takes place bright and early on January 1st at 6:14 a.m. EST. Among the many aspects taking place today, the Sun will also conjunct Pluto at 1:54 p.m. EST. What a way to start the year! This New Moon makes a series of important conjunctions today that set the year off to a very auspicious start. At 6:44 a.m. EST it conjuncts Pluto. At 9:32 a.m. EST, it conjuncts Mercury, and at 9:06 p.m., it sextiles (or encourages) Saturn. The combination of water and earth energies spell both adaptation and blazing the trails of new enterprises. The Sabian Symbol for 11 degrees Capricorn is A Large Group of Pheasants. This is a symbol of the refinement that Man’s personality must put itself through in order to accomplish major personal aspirations. Pheasant is a rich man’s meal. In order to be worthy of such fine fare, we must be up to the occasion in the refinement of our manner and our skills. Find 11 degrees Capricorn in your chart. The house in which it falls is the one in which you will be blazing new paths this year, while continuing to take care of your everyday duties.

Mercury jets into the sign of Aquarius on Saturday the 11th at 4:35 p.m. EST. In Aquarius, our thoughts will turn to futuristic and humanistic themes. Tens of millions were inspired by the life of Nelson Mandela in December. What can we do to carry his legacy forward? How can we step up to the next level and improve the lives of those around us? Electronic gadgets are also ruled by Aquarius. Is there a phone or ipad you’ve been waiting to pounce on? This month is the time to do it.

This month’s exceptional Full Moon at 26 degrees Cancer takes place at 11:52 p.m. EST on Wednesday the 15th. Earlier in the day, the moon is exactly conjunct Jupiter re-emphasizing both the extremely emotional nature of Cancer and the cardinal, trail-blazing nature of this sign. One does not think of Cancer sun sign people as being great catalysts for change and yet, witness both Nelson Mandela and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama who have dedicated their lives to serving as loving and protecting parents for their respective countries. This Full Moon is in the exact degree of Nelson Mandela’s sun sign at birth! The passing of this world leader is a great loss for the planet. But in experiencing his passing, Mankind is learning more about his life and the steps he took to achieve a lasting peace for his country. The Sabian Symbol for 26 degrees Cancer is People Reading on Davenports. The keyword is “repose.” The seemingly static symbolism of repose is that it speaks of rest as a primary call to self-strengthening and as a prelude to some greater outreaching. Many have commented that if Nelson Mandela had not been imprisoned in his fourties, he would never have had the time to mature and reflect upon the situation in South Africa that was required, to take such important steps toward change. In having to wait for his opportunity to shine again as a leader of the resistance against Apartheid, Mandela used every precious moment of his 27 years in prison to learn the ways and the psychology of the white Africaner, so that he could learn to forgive him and to live side by side with him. Like a lion stalking its prey, Mandela was waiting for the right moment to strike, but not with an arrow, but instead with an olive branch. What an appropriate symbol and what perfect timing for this Full Moon, is the day of January 15th. May Mandela’s legacy live on forever!

Happy Birthday Aquarius! The sun moves into the sign of the Waterbearer at 10:51 p.m. EST on Sunday the 19th. This is a day for many visionary thoughts and encounters with friends with today’s moon in Virgo emphasizing the equality driven nature of Aquarius. Celebrate with a lunch or brunch together at a favorite restaurant. The key phrase for Aquarius is “I know.” Intellectual and intelligent, Aquarius people are happiest when dedicated to a cause that will help others. Their true calling is to find a group of people or animal charity that they can assist to become self-sufficient. Aquarians are future-oriented and often misunderstood for their ideas which are often out of synch with the times. The upcoming year is very good for Aquarians from July 17th forward with expansive and fortunate Jupiter in Leo brightening their path. The second half of this year will be a non-stop barrage of exciting opportunities including international travel, philosophy, religion, higher education and religion. You shouldn’t worry about which projects to choose right away. Try them all on for size and start to make decisions on which projects to follow through on at the end of 2014. This opposition only happens every six years so buckle your seat belts and enjoy! Saturn in Scorpio this year will continue to square your Sun causing difficulty with authority figures. Either your boss nit-picks the work you do or stubbornly ignores your extra effort. You will need to play nice with this person for a while longer so avoid a total confrontation. If you follow the rules (as ridiculous as they may be) you will eventually be rewarded appropriately in December of 2014 when Saturn finally moves into Sagittarius.

Martin Luther King Day on Monday the 20th, has a distinctly humanitarian flavor with the sun newly moved into Aquarius and the analytical moon in Virgo. This is an ideal day for work of a humanitarian kind in which we are helping others to help themselves. Find out about projects of this type in your community and resolve to help this year.

A dark moment of self-doubt comes up on Saturday the 25th. The moon in Scorpio makes an occultation to Saturn at 8:42 a.m. EST. This means that the moon and Saturn are not only aligned by degree but also by declination, forming the most exact conjunction possible. Moon in Scorpio can be suspicious of others as well as paranoid about one’s own short comings. The Sabian Symbol for this conjunction at 11 degrees Scorpio is A Drowning Man Rescued. This speaks to the soul’s personal immortality and its eagerness to return to various phases of its experience again and again. The keyword is “safety,” and speaks to the great courage inherent in the lives of those which take great risks and which ultimately protect one from fatal circumstances. When negative, this Sabian Symbol degree relates to uncalled for hysteria and a tendency to rely upon transient excitement. Don’t make a mountain out of a mole hill today. Justice will be served if we give it enough time.

This month doesn’t close on a calm note. A rare, second sparkling New Moon at 11 degrees Aquarius will rise at 4:38 p.m.EST on Thursday, January 30th. Just before it rises, there is a sextile to Uranus in Aries, striking a revolutionary tone. This is the kind of New Moon that heralds a major scientific discovery (as is known to happen historically with Uranus in Aries.) The fact that Jupiter will make an exact opposition to Pluto at 4:36 a.m. EST the very next day and that this opposition has been brewing since January 25th , the day of the moon/Saturn occultation, makes it all the more ominous. The forces of freedom will not be denied this week. Whether in South Africa, Syria, Yemen or elsewhere around the globe, revolutionary forces will be called to action to support one ethnic group against another. The oppressed can no longer be held down (Jupiter in Cancer) by the powers that be (Pluto in Capricorn.) Likewise revolutionary scientific and humanitarian concepts are likely to come to light during the period between January 25th and February 4th. It will be exciting to see what manifests!

Finally on Friday, January 31st, we enter the Chinese New Year of the Horse. Interestingly, Nelson Mandela was a Horse! Horse people are born in 1918, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1991 and 2003. Google Chinese Year of the Horse to find a website that will tell you the exact date range for each of these years. The spirit of the horse is recognized to be the Chinese people's ethos – making unremitting efforts to improve themselves. It is energetic, bright, warm-hearted, intelligent and able. Strengths:

People born in the year of the horse have ingenious communicating techniques and in their community they always want to be in the limelight. They are clever, kind to others, and like joint venture careers. Although they sometimes talk too much, they are cheerful, perceptive, talented, earthy and stubborn. They like entertainment and large crowds. They are popular among friends, active at work and refuse to give in to failure. Weaknesses: Horses cannot bear too much constraint. Their interests may be only superficial and lacking real substance. They are usually impatient and hot blooded about everything other than their daily work. They are independent and rarely listen to advice. Failure may result in pessimism. They usually have strong endurance but also a bad temper. Flamboyant by nature, they are wasteful since they are not good with matters of finance due to a lack of budgetary efficiency. Some of those who are born in the year of the horse like to move in glamorous circles while pursuing high profile careers. They tend to interfere in the projects of others and frequently fail to finish projects of their own.

Also on January 31st, Mercury moves into the sign of Pisces at 9:29 a.m. EST and Venus stations direct after a six-week retrograde since December 21st. News relating to conditions that affect the masses will be highlighted in the news this week. Let’s hope that an earthquake disaster is not in the cards with the extreme cardinal energy of the Jupiter/Pluto opposition. Mercury in Pisces is often the bearer of news relating to mass victimization at the hands of the forces of Nature.

To end on a high note, Venus goes direct on Friday the 31st after a six-week hiatus in retrograde since December 21st, the first day of the Capricorn sun period. Venus Direct is often a symbol that finances are on the mend. Holiday sales reports figures will come available in the next week and we can hope that they will be better than expected. Natives of Venus-ruled signs, Taurus and Libra will feel physically and emotionally better today, after this six-week eclipse of their energy. A sense of being valued for the work one does and for the emotional warmth one generates will return and motivate us all but especially Taurus and Libra sun sign folks. Capricorn sun sign natives will be in the spotlight again, feeling appreciated by their family, peers and authorities at work. After a long year, of having Jupiter square their Capricorn sun sign, throwing monkey wrenches in their moves toward professional and financial progress, this boost from Venus is very welcome. All of a sudden, Capricorns will feel they are the center of attention between January 21st and March 6th when Venus moves into Aquarius. Enjoy SeaGoats! You deserve it!

CAPRICORN: December 21nd to January 18th: Happy Birthday Capricorn! Each year we look to the aspects the Solar Return Sun makes to inner and outer planets to determine the kind of year that we will experience overall. This year the Sun in Capricorn makes mostly positive aspects to both inner and outer planets. This year with Jupiter continuing to move through the sign of Cancer through July 16th, you will be surrounded by opportunities for expansion and growth. Between January and July 16th Jupiter will oppose your natal sun and will widen your circle of contacts as well as bring helpful new teachers into your life. You will be called upon to teach to a larger audience than ever before in some way too. Travel, education and a potential change of residence are all in the cards for the Seagoat, especially before July 17th. This year the sun in Capricorn makes very positive aspects to many outer and inner planets, yielding a wide range of birthday forecasts. If your birthday is not included in the aspects, you are not being left out. This means that you will be blessed to experience a year blessed to be the essence of Capricorn. Only SeaGoats born between the 17th and the 18th of January will have an un-aspected solar year.
